Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
