Nineteen of the Russian's 21 victories have been achieved on hard courts

A comeback the Russian player won his maiden championship for 882 days with victory over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The athlete, a former number one, has endured a challenging period, managing just a single victory at the major tournaments and suffering a meltdown at the US Open.

His inconsistency on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in especial - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and ultimately splitting with long-time trainer Gilles Cervara.

Now collaborating with his coach and Goetzke, he has gradually progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over challenger Moutet.

This marks his first title after the Rome competition and first on a hard surface since March of the previous year.

Success also indicates the Russian has secured 21 championships at twenty-one different tournaments.

"It's the first time I'm at a event with my children simultaneously, so to win a championship is really nice," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my child my daughter, because the initial championship I won when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his previous six championship matches, featuring in the German tournament earlier this year.

His counter-punching play style and regular reactions on the playing surface had prompted commentators to doubt if his skill to play at the highest level was over.

Yet the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, striving to come to the net and compete positively, supported by an enhanced service.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the challenging Moutet, winning four of the concluding five games to gain the advantage.

The competitors exchanged break points in the second set before Moutet, attempting for his first tour victory, took control to push for a third set.

He saved four early-game break points in a tight final set before Medvedev broke to that score to close out the victory.

Suitably, the winner clinched the win with a rally at the front of the court, with Moutet failing to handle a return after two hours and 38 minutes.
