Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
