Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
