A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
